As we enter into this special season of Lent, it is important to note that this is not just a Catholic thing but all Christian denominations celebrate this season of fasting, almsgiving and prayer. In this spirit, our church hosted an ecumenical prayer service in observance of World Day of Prayer. This past Friday, several of our youth helped to welcome many visitors from area churches to pray together in particular for Women in the Philippines. Three of our young ladies, Anna, Ella and Charlotte also read as part of the service. It was onderful to see our youth, alongside so many Women of Faith, joining in prayer with groups from all over the world. Our youth are rehearsing for the up coming "Live Passion" which will take place on Friday, April 7 at 7:30 pm. Along with the combined choir, who will provide amazing musical narrative, the young people will take us through a dramatization of Jesus' Passion from the Agony in the Garden, Condemnation, Carrying the Cross, Death and Glorious Resurrection. This is no ordinary Stations of the Cross. Please mark your calendar and plan to join us as we journey toward redemption through the Risen Jesus.
There is no Sunday School on March 12 due to March Break but the Jr. High will meet on Sunday, March 19 for additional practice time 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm.

Last Saturday, five of our teens along with two adults from our Sunday School program joined the St Thomas More Chapter of the Knights of Columbus for a Bowling Tournament. They each took turns bowling alongside our Knights against a dozen other teams from all over HRM. It was wonderful to see the youth interacting with the adults and I received many compliments about how well behaved and
cheerful they were. It was an excellent activity to bridge the generation gap and we are grateful to the Knights for inviting us. Our teens were very powerful ambassadors for our church as they were respectful, joyous and good sports. It is my hope that we can do this again. We would like to play Soccer in the Mancini Cup again this year. Any youth interested in participating on April 29 for this day of fun and fellowship with youth teams from other churches in HRM can contact me at [email protected]

Our Sunday school lessons have been dealing with very important issues that our youth face every day. With so much influence from society and the media, it is very challenging for us to know what is right and true. The creed of Individualism promotes a philosophy of "What is in it for me?" This breeds selfishness, greed, isolation and exploitation. Hedonism believes "If it feels good, do it." This leads to gluttony, lust, laziness and procrastination. Minimalism asks "What is the least I can do and still get what I want?" This will keep us from setting or achieving goals and excellence. We will never reach the potential God has in mind for us. Relativism may be the worst by planting the notion that what is right for you is not right for me. That there are no absolute truths and my choices should be based on what is right for you with no regard for others. This thinking causes confusion and hopelessness. As Christians, we are called to follow
10 simple rules and to care for one another. Living in true fellowship with our family and the greater community, we can find true happiness. We can live the way God intended for us to live. The youth and in fact all of us must swim against the flow but the reward of True Happiness is worth the effort. It is also important to encourage each other to be the best we can be. We concluded that we must Love God, Love ourselves and Love others and the whole world would be a better place.

It is always my goal to have the youth participate as fully as possible in the life of our church. With that in mind. we are planning to lead the Stations of the Cross on Friday, April 7 at 7pm. This will not be your typical Stations but will be a Still Life with costumed youth acting out the Passion accompanied by music provided by Kim Sampson and our combined choirs. If any of you recall some years ago Pat and Ike Kent (parishioners) did something similar and it was very powerful. Our youth are already rehearsing, working hard to make this a meaningful experience for you and themselves. Please mark your calendar for April 7 and join us as they enact the suffering of the Lord. We hope everyone will be moved by this event and bring us closer together as a community while we honor our Lord and His sacrifice for us.

In our class last week we tackled the very difficult issues surrounding the "Right to Life" movement. On Friday, January 27, a huge crowd marched on Washington, DC in the 44th annual protest. Despite the tremendous passion participants feel about the sanctity of life at all stages, it was a very peaceful march without a single window broken or any injuries. Our Church teaches that Life is precious from the moment of inception until natural end and that God alone determines when that is. While I made it clear ,I had no intention of arguing the point but to inform them of the truth so that they may make an informed decision, there was a lively debate non the less. I fully
expected tough questions and was challenged to back up my claims that Life is Life from the moment of conception. A great deal of our time was spent distinguishing between facts and opinions. Many seemed very surprised to learn how many abortions are done every day nationwide with the majority being mature women and that our tax dollars pay for them. We discussed the difference between civic law which allows for abortion and God's law which tells us "Thou shall not Kill". Also noted was that God has given us Free Will which means we have always had the right to choose along with the knowledge of what His expectations of us are. It remains a volatile and emotional issue so we must all continue to pray for the conversion of hearts. Check out the video "Conception to Birth Visualized -Ted Talks”

We have been preparing the youth for Confirmation with the help of a great program developed by Matthew Kelly. The first session examined what it means to be true to ourselves. By adopting a habit of making good decisions and developing virtues we can become the best version of ourselves. When we embrace the virtues of goodness, courage, faith, hope, charity, compassion, generosity, morality and kindness we are doing Gods will. The people around us will be drawn to these qualities and our relationships will be more fulfilling. The world outside tries very hard to make us believe that other things such as looks, money, talent or how many friends you have on Facebook are more important but they can not bring you true happiness. Only the love of God and a relationship with Jesus can satisfy us. We long to be excepted and validated and when we feel we are, we can truly love others as God calls us to do.

Our lesson continued the examination of the Mass as we looked at the Scriptures. While the confirmation parents were in a meeting in
the Sacred Heart room, the youth were broken into groups and each given a Bible story. Their instructions were to read it, interpret it and act it out. As is often the case, when youth are given the freedom to be expressive, they can be very creative and this was very much the case. At the conclusion of their meeting, the parents became the audience for a lively, colorful and innovative performance of four well known passages. In the first we saw Jesus Walk on Water next to a boat fashioned from a folding table, The Sermon on the Mount
where the mountain was built from a step ladder and some foam blocks. The Good Samaritan was accompanied by some convincing
physical comedy from our victim and the excitement of Water Turning into Wine was a bit over the top. The laughter from the audience, as well as the performers, showed how much fun they were having while learning the lessons from the Word of God.

We welcomed our youth back from the Christmas break. Last week, from the pews of our beautiful church in the evening light's glow, we began exploring the parts of Mass. Starting with the Introduction which includes the greeting and welcome to all and moving along to the prayers asking for forgiveness. It is important to prepare ourselves to be in the company of God who loves us and wants to heal all our hurts and pain and bring us into a closer relationship with Him. Forgiveness is the best place to start that encounter. Although we are called to include God in everything we do every day, it is especially significant to gather as a faith community to grow and support each other in our journey toward that goal. Being together in this sacred place has real meaning and purpose.
Our next lesson will delve into The Word with the intent of discovering the powerful messages God has for us and how they are still relevant today.

21 of our youth enjoyed a sleepover to ring in the new year on Jan 1 / 2. Several brought their friends to play Taboo, build and eat Tacos, bake cookies, dance and watch movies. We also had prayer and meditation along with some music in the church. The one thing we most did not do was SLEEP. I guess that is why they call it a sleepover because you sleep when it is over. We are so blessed to have a welcoming space where they feels so comfortable and eagerly invite their friends. Thanks to all who helped as chaperones and with food. We could not have done it without you.

With energy and smiles, the youth were on hand Friday night to help serve and clean up for the Chicken Pot Pie Dinner that the KOC hosted. We thank them all. A special Thank You goes out to Jillian Peters who is a regu-lar choir member at 11:15 mass and a Confirmation candidate this year. She has generously given of her time and talent to help lead our little ones in the Christmas play this weekend. It is young people such as this, we can draw inspiration from. Next weekend, Dec 17/18, the youth will be greeting you as you arrive for Mass. They will cheerfully accept your food donations for the Giving Tree, take them to the Hooper room and sort it all in preparation for packing and delivery on Dec 22. Youth will ride along on delivery day to aid with the heavy lifting. Youth will also be making hand made

Last week’s lesson was about God’s unconditional love for us. I shared that when I was young, I knew about God. I could recite the prayers and knew Bible stories. It was like watching a TV show, I knew the people and story line but didn't actually have a per-sonal relationship with anyone. As I grew older, I be-came acutely aware of pains and sorrows that I was not equipped to cope with. I had no idea I could find com-fort in the arms of Jesus. No one told me of His uncon-ditional Love. This is a message everyone needs to hear, especially our youth. Through short videos from You Tube, youth were re-assured that Jesus loves them just as they are, unconditionally. He always has and always will. Even when we mess up or reject Him, Jesus will be waiting patiently with loving open arms for you to come to him. When we realize that He loves us that much, we can begin to trust, know and love Him in return. To de-velop this relationship, we must start with a conversa-tion, start with prayer. As we welcome a personal rela-tionship with Jesus, our burdens are easier to carry and we no longer feel alone. Prayer brings us closer to God, we need only start the dialog. We will expound on the topic of prayer in upcoming classes. There are few things in life that are free but the Love of the Lord is free for all.

As our youth gathered last week, we reflected on the Saints. We focused mainly on those who were young and students discovered how many were their age or a bit older. They were also surprised to see the variety of social backgrounds and economic situations they came from. Although many lived a very long time ago, we also learned that at least 2 have been canon-ized in their lifetime. In particular, they were fascinated with the work that Mother Teresa has done as well as how far reaching her influence still is. They concluded that all the Saints were pretty much ordinary people like us and although they often met great challenges, they were able to do extraordi-nary things through the power of God. Now, they too feel empowered to strive to live as saints.
Several of our youth enjoyed the inspiration and en-couragement they experienced at the Steubenville Launch Party on Saturday, November 5. Through the use of music, speakers and especially a witness talk from a young person much like themselves, they were left with a longing for more. Those who have not gone to the conference in the past are open to spending a weekend next summer to grow in their faith.

Through a lovely, short video called "Butterfly Circus", we were able to beautifully illustrate the unconditional Love of Jesus to the youth. In this 20 minute film, they met a young man named Will who is outwardly flawed and is treated poorly by all who encounter him. Then he meets Mr. Mendez who is different, who treats him with respect and compassion. Through unconditional love, this new companion and his friends encourage Will and although he faces more struggles, he emerges as someone who is confident, capable and able to inspire others. The image of a butterfly and it's life cycle is used to punctuate the transformation. Will goes from a pathetic shell of a man into someone who has great worth to himself and in the eyes of others. The youth could easily see that Mr Mendez represented Jesus and
that we, like Will, are all broken in some way. We can be restored if we only choose to follow Jesus. "Butterfly Circus" can be found
on Youtube and I recommend that everyone of any age watch this inspiring story. Perhaps we can all grow into our full potential through the Love of Jesus and see ourselves as Jesus sees us. We are Magnificent! The youth have been busy this week packing and wrapping the
shoe boxes to be distributed to local women's shelters this Christmas. They also helped serve lunch and clean dishes at the Fall Fair. Saturday night many will participate in the Launch Party for Steubenville as a way to prepare for the Youth Conference next summer.

This past week, our teens were challenged to see how much they knew about Jesus and His life. Teams armed with a bean bag and what looked like a hop scotch grid, tackled questions as they tried to gain points and beat the clock. Through this friendly competition, amid the laughter, they found time to discuss the many events surrounding the birth of Christianity. They were especially surprised to learn how society treated women and that Jesus got in a lot of trouble for talking to them and treating them with respect. They marveled at His teaching on forgiveness and His compassion toward those who were poor and ill but the most amazing discovery was that Jesus gained billions of followers without the use of social media.

Our Youth will partner with two young ladies attending PA for a service project. Hailey Brien, confirmed here a few years ago and Maggie Easton are working with the Halifax Shoe Box Project which serves Bryony House, Phoenix House and Dartmouth Family Center among other shelters for women, to provide a box full of lovely personal items festively wrapped. This Christmas gift is meant to convey that they are special and have not been forgotten. The youth will host a Soup Supper on Saturday Oct 15 after the 4:00 pm Mass and on Sunday Oct 16 after the 11:15 Mass. All proceeds from a Free Will Offering will go toward the purchase of the items. Gift cards such as Tim's,
Shoppers Drug Mart, Sobeys etc. are also welcome as donations. Please support what we believe is a very worthy cause. Matthew quotes Jesus as saying "Whatever you do for the least of my people, you do for me."

Our leadership team was Commissioned and Blessed during the 11:15 Mass last Sunday. Please keep Rosanna, Danny, Maria, Alex, Niko and Gael in your prayers as they work with our youth to build the Kingdom of God. I would also like to thank Olivia for her many years of help and we will continue to pray for her as she goes about her university studies. Our Friday Youth Group were able to get one last dragonboat paddle in and a dozen teens enjoyed the sun and fresh air as we made our way around the lake and exploring Bull Rock Island along with the eagles and osprey. Last week we enjoyed the Skate Board Park and Basket Ball Court across the street from our church. We welcome all youth on Friday night from 7-9 pm. in the hall and each week is something new and fun.

The Steubenville Atlantic Youth Conference took place last weekend and our youth had an amazing time. From the very first note of the very first song they were immersed in the energy of the over 750 teens and the overwhelming love of God. Throughout the weekend they were lead in Praise and Worship by the band, engaged by the many powerful speakers and challenged by small group discussion about what they had heard. The highlight for many of them was Adoration, where they encountered, in a very real way, the Risen Jesus. For many of them, it was the first time going and they were impacted in a profound way. So much so that when we arrived back at the church Sunday afternoon, they did not want to leave. We continued to sing praise through the songs we learned and share all the experiences and insights from the weekend. I think it is safe to say these youth were transformed by this encounter with Christ and will continue to Thirst for more.

Congratulations to our Confirmandi!
May the Holy Spirit guide you as you continue your faith journey.
Confirmation was celebrated on Sunday the 15th of May and what a celebration of Faith it was.
The Confirmandi entered in procession singing and clapping down the aisle, the joyful spirit was infectious. Resplendent in their white robes, they came to the altar to renew the promises made at their Baptism and to dedicate themselves to follow Jesus. Father Toochukwu gave them powerful words of encouragement along with invoking the Holy Spirit to fortify them. Then he anointed them with the chrism oil as a sign that the soul is forever marked with the Sign of Faith. Each was vested with a red stole to signify their call to be disciples of the Living God. The Mass was enhanced by the beautiful music provided by the choir and in particular by Jillian, Olivia and Danny. The praise and worship continued right to the end when the youth danced out just as we imagine King David danced for the joy of knowing the Lord.
Thank you to all who helped to make this such a special occasion . We thank the CWL for their gift of the crosses and for organizing the reception.
Please keep praying for these young people as they continue this amazing journey.

Our Confirmation students were treated to a very special evening led by Danny Perera and a group of his friends who did Franciscan LEAD last year. Mark Saldanha, Christian Huntley, Cameron Orlando, Mackenzie O'Quinn, Victoria Muise, Jenna Viscount and Bryson Cowan, affectionately known as "The Neapolitan Dinosaurs" began by playing some of the music during the 4 pm Mass to set the mood for a prayerful and engaging Retreat that followed.
Several teens from area churches joined our group to enjoy a pot luck supper and some fun icebreakers as a way to get acquainted. The team of young adults gave various talks and personal witnesses to show how they have followed Jesus and built a personal relationship with Him. They also talked about before and after the experiences that drew them closer to God as well as practical ways we can live a better life for the love and glory of God. To help deliver this message of salvation, they did some powerful skits and lots of praise and worship music. We concluded in the church for prayer where several parents joined us. I want to extend my thanks to these remarkable young people for giving of their time and talent to share their Faith in this very real and meaningful way.

A very enthusiastic team of 13 players attended the Mancini Cup Soccer Tournament last Saturday. They played very well and although we lost the Bronze Medal game by one goal, we had a wonderful time. Our youth
behaved in a very sportsmen like manor and were exceptional ambassadors for St Thomas More. A special Thank You goes out to Jason Neves ,our coach, and Matthew Leblanc ,the assistant coach , for giving of their time and talent.
Thank you also to Maria O'Brien who volunteered as the Photographer for the event and Tanya Thompson of St Agnes & her team who organized the day. We are truly blessed to have so many folks who help to make these opportunities happen for our youth. Starting with a blessing from Archbishop Mancini until the closing Award
ceremony it was an outstanding day for all.

Using an excerpt from the book "Rediscover Jesus", we started a very interesting conversation. Matthew Kelly says," The world is a mess and we see that in a hundred different way every day." The youth identified many problems we face such as pollution, world hunger, drug abuse, drinking, terrorism, global warming, abortion, wars, bullying, racism and poverty just to name a few. Matthew says " While folks talk about changing the world, many don't really believe it can be changed. Government can't really legislate goodness, virtue and morality, it must come from a heart that is open to God." We then began brainstorming how to make a better world and the youth amazed me with their insight and compassion. Matthew adds " With 2 billion Christians on the planet, there is no better group in a position to change the world and we can do it by simply acting like Christians." The student concluded that to effect change we must all do small things as often as possible. Although we are young, we can make a difference and may inspire others along the way. Before long, the small changes will become bigger changes and we will have truly made a difference. We finished the night up in the church for prayer. Danny lend us in praise and worship as we asked Jesus to give us the strength and courage to "Be His hands and feet in the world."

Last week's lesson was about Forgiveness not just as it pertains to our sins but to those who sin against us. We talked about how it feels to carry around a grudge and resentment. Each of the youth were made to hold a heavy book in their hand with an outstretched arm to represent the burden of holding a grudge. After a short time it was very uncomfortable and they were so happy to release the heavy load. They concluded that holding onto the anger and resentment takes a lot of energy and is a waste so it is better to let it go, forgive and move on. Forgiveness is something we do as much for ourselves and it is for the person who has wronged us. In conclusion, we prayed the Lord's Prayer with special attention to the segment " Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us". The youth were then encouraged to write down on paper, something they needed to forgive and we took them outside to burn the papers as a way of giving up to God their forgiveness. With the burden lifted, they found their hearts were lighter.

he great mystery of the Holy Trinity has long challenged Christians and it is an especially difficult concept to teach to youth but we took on the task in a very visual way. To illustrate the concept of the three distinct natures within one,(Father, Son and Holy Spirit) we used an Apple cut in half across the middle to reveal the core in the shape of a star. The skin represents God the Father, who protects us while the flesh stands for the Son who feeds us and the core holds the seeds that perpetuate our Faith. The 3 properties of Water, ice, water and steam are a great example of something that is always H2O but can appear in three different forms. In its solid form, ice can support us and keep us from sinking while the liquid form is life giving, without water we would die. Through steam or simple evaporation, the water becomes airborne and is all around us. We breath it in and although we can not see it, it's always there. A Candle has wax, a wick and flame. All 3 are needed to give light and warmth. The Celtic Trinity Knot has one continuous line that clearly shows three parts. All are intertwined with each other. My favorite image of the Trinity is that of a Butterfly. We first see it as a caterpillar walking on the ground like most creatures (just as Jesus walked among us as human), then willingly is entombed in a cocoon during which time it appears lifeless. After a short time, it emerges as a completely transformed beautiful butterfly no longer bound to the earth but able to sore through the air. The butterfly is different from the caterpillar and yet the same.
Perhaps the tastiest way to show the Trinity was the Trini-Buns, the name they gave the treats we created from three small balls of dough rolled in cinnamon sugar and placed together into muffin tins. As they baked, they merged together to form one cupcake but the 3 parts were still evident, and as the aroma filled the air, it was easy to compare that to the Holy Spirit. Our class concluded with the best prayer to proclaim the Holy Trinity.
Glory be to the Father, to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. World without end. Amen

Thank you to all who attended the Chowder meal following Good Friday's service. I think a record number of folks came downstairs to enjoy homemade chowder and biscuits lovingly prepared by the youth and served up with a smile. More than a dozen youth worked on this event and $450 was raised toward their trip to Steubenville.
During the Mass on Holy Thursday, several of the youth presented the Sacred Oils and read the descriptions of what they are used for. After Mass, they all came downstairs for Adoration in the hall where Danny provided prayerful and uplifting music. Through this participation, the celebration became more meaningful for them and they came away with a new appreciation for the Eucharist
Fun Day was held on April 1 when youth provided child care in the hall during the school in-service day. A good time was had by all. We will have another Fun Day on Thursday, April 14 from 8:30-4:30. Children should bring a lunch and we provide the rest. If you or someone you know could use this service, please pass along the info. The fee is $20 for 1 child or $30 for a family with the proceeds going to the Steubenville fund. All are welcome.
Our youth will participate in the Mancini Cup Soccer Tournament again this year. This event brings teams of youth together from all over the Diocese for a day of fun and fellowship. It is held at Soccer Nova Scotia in Clayton Park April 30 from 8am until 1pm, and all are welcome to come cheer on our team as we try to
improve on our 4th place standing of last year.

Although the youth have not had classes during the march break, they have still been spending time together in our church. On Wednesday, they got together in the hall to play, dance and laugh along with a little time for praise and worship. Then, on Saturday, 15 youth came to have a sleepover in the hall. Among the many activities was baking for the purpose of hosting Hospitality on Sunday after the 11:15 mass. As the congregation gathered in the hall prior to the Palm Sunday Procession, 20 youth (a few extras joined us for breakfast) fell in behind the choir to lead everyone in song as we went upstairs to Celebrate Mass. After Mass, the youth mingled during Hospitality as they watched everyone enjoying the homemade cinnamon rolls, cookies, squares and sandwiches all made with loving hands. This is just a small way for the youth to thank our church for providing a warm and welcoming place to gather, to make friends and to grow closer to God.
I would also like to say Thank You to Danny and Maria for staying the night to help supervise and to the Knights for providing the food for breakfast.

The youth in our Jr. High |Program lead the Stations of the Cross last Friday and I would like to thank the readers, candle |bearers, alter servers and the cross bearer for doing a wonder-ful job. The reflections for each of the stations were written with the youth in mind and they really helped them to know what Jesus is asking of each of us.
"If anyone wants to come with me, he or she must put aside self-interest and then pick up the cross to follow me. Pursuing self-interest leads to nothing in the end while putting aside self-interest for my sake leads to everything." Matthew 16:24.
These words, spoken by Jesus to his followers, have just as much relevance today as they did back then. |Whenever we help someone else we are heeding the call to be compassionate. during the Stations, our youth asked Jesus to forgive us for the times we have not done our best to care for others and to give us the strength to do better. As we draw closer to Easter,

After spending 40 days in the desert in deep concentration and prayer with God the Father, Jesus was fortified to take on His ministry. He knew it would be hard but that God had his back. He also knew that he would need help so He set about finding Disciples. SO... Jesus came to our class to recruit our young people to be his followers. Through an improv skit, our Jesus tried to
convince the youth to follow Him but He was met with many excuses. "I have to finish my homework first", "I have to go ask my mom", " Only if I can bring my IPad", " I don't really know what you want from me" , " But what about my family and friends, I don't want to leave them" Only one said yes without hesitation but later as he was donning the prayer shawl, he began to have second thoughts about what he was committing to. As Jesus explained what they must do to follow Him, they became concerned they would not be good enough but He assured them He would be with them on the journey and would teach them so they could teach others. After nearly 2000 years, Jesus is still calling us all to be His disciples and He promises to be with us as we share the Good News. Jesus is the King yet He walked among us and He came to show us just how much the Father loves us. How can we keep that to ourselves. Once we know this tremendous love, we must share it with others.

We were blessed to have Gail Bennett as a guest in our class last week. Through a very clever
science experiment, she was able to illustrate quite dramatically how sin and reconciliation affect us all. She began with a clear vase of pure water which is us at birth. Then each student added a pinch of colored sugar which represented our sin until the water was very murky and dark, no longer pure. She then poured in bleach as a means to cleans us but that only faded the sin rather than take it away much like our remorse and penance will help but not wipe us completely clean. It was only when she
introduced the baking soda which portrays God's Grace through confession, forgiveness and absolution, that we are restored to our original brilliance. The youth could clearly see that the state of Grace is the preferred state to be in. During this Lenten season, we encourage all to go to confession in order to receive the gift of God's Grace.

In Matthew 4, we are told that Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness, ate nothing and encountered the devil who tried to tempt Him with material things and with power. Although Satan was persistent, Jesus used the scriptures to help defend against him. In order to help the youth understand this passage and connect it back to why we observe Lent, we showed a video of "Oscar Rivera's Keynote talk entitled The Thief from 2015 Steubenville Atlantic which can be found on Youtube. Oscar gets right to the heart of many of the issues facing our young people and encourages them to follow Jesus' lead by praying through scripture to find the strength they need to resist temptation. Satan's biggest deception is to convince people that he doesn't exist making it impossible to fight against he. We must be aware that he does exist and that his purpose is to draw us away from our Loving Father. He starts with little thing and keeps working on corrupting us until we feel there is no hope. This Lent is an opportunity to start our workout. Much like any athletic endeavor, we have to train in order to gain skills and strength to meet our opponent on the field. And like the sports games we play, each temptation is a new challenge and we can never stop training or trying. Together as a team, we will also support each other in this fight.

Over the last several weeks, we have been learning about the history of our faith and getting to know some of the most important people. It was time to draw the connection from then to now. As we begin Lent, we explain that the tradition of Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday was the day everyone used up all the rich foods such as cream, eggs, sugar and butter that they were not permitted to eat during the 40 days of fasting. The youth are reminded of the 40 years the Israelites wondered in the wilderness and are told of the 40 days Jesus prayed in the desert before starting his ministry. We also talked a great deal about the purpose of a Lenten Pledge. It is to help us to be stronger, self disciplined and focused as well as give us the opportunity to give alms. We asked the Question " If you give up chocolate for Lent, what does that do?" It may make us stronger to resist temptation but how does that help someone else. May we suggest that you take the money you would spend and give it to the poor. How about giving up fighting with your sibling or perhaps less video games and more chores to help around the house. Someone suggested giving up School but after the laughter died down, we all agreed that has no benefit but if we worked harder at school many would benefit now and in the future. Their assignment is to decide on a Lenten Pledge that they will work on "One Day at a Time" with the two fold purpose of bringing us closer to God and helping others.

As we continue to discover the adventures of Moses and the Israelites after escaping from Egypt, the youth embraced the story telling tradition in some unique ways. Each group was given a segment of the tale to depict in whatever way they choose and the result was very entertaining and enlightening.
Our first group did a skit showing God providing food. Chelsea, acting as God, instructed everyone to gather what they needed for one day only and then covered the ground with manna (rubber bands). While most did as they were told, ( with much mirth) some gathered more with the intent to save it for the next day but it spoiled. They soon discovered this was a test to see if they could TRUST GOD to provide for all they needed and that there are consequences to being Greedy. Claire convincingly played a frustrated Moses trying to teach a thick-headed mob. The second leg of our story was told more as a narrative with Jethro trying to convince Moses to delegate some of the leadership duties to trustworthy, God fearing men who would represent smaller groups of the people and take care of smaller matters while Moses remained in charge and took care of the bigger things. The youth noted that this looked a lot like our current form of government.
The third presentation was complete with costumes and the characters came to life as they walked us through the events that brought us the Ten Commandments. Annique showed us a very surprising side to Moses while Jason brought his own unique style to his portrayal of GOD. Finally the Israelites had clearly defined rules to guide them to becoming the nation God has chosen them to be. While all of our youth were being animated, laughing and having fun, they were learning
important history of our faith as well as how it connects to and is still relevant today.

In the beginning there was the Word and the Word was God. Our faith is older than writing and to help our youth understand about our oral tradition. we invited Moses to lead our lesson. His costume, complete with leather sandals, headdress and a big staff, captured their attention as he lead them on an Exodus throughout the church. During the trek, Moses told the exciting story of how he, with God's help, convinced Pharaoh to free the Israelites from slavery but only after God rained down 10 plagues as a way of showing that He was more powerful than the king. They left in a great hurry with no time to even let the bread rise. Taking only what they could carry, men, women, children, sheep, goats and oxen all began a journey to an uncertain future. When they reached the sea, they were terrified because they were now being followed by Pharaoh who had changed he mind. Once again, with God's help, Moses saves the day by parting the sea so they can escape but when the army follows, the water comes back and drowns them. ( Doesn't this sound like an action movie complete with the Hero saving the day only to be faced with yet another challenge?) Our teens continue to wander around the wilderness, (church) until they are tired and hungry taking refuge and making camp in the vestry. They go to sleep grumbling about their empty bellies and thinking they were better off back in Egypt. Imagine how Moses is feeling after doing all that work to save them and all they can do is complain. In the morning, while it is still dark, Our Moses starts throwing baby pita breads at the youth to curb their hunger. Manna from Heaven. This is not where the story ends but like any good Trilogy, we wanted to leave them wanting more so stay tuned next week. We want to connect this oral tradition back to how we still hear the scripture aloud at every Mass.

Last week's lesson was focused on Our Blessed Mother Mary. We wanted to discover more about Mary beyond the snapshot we see of her in the Nativity Story. We all know that She said yes to God and had Jesus but could she have really known what she was saying yes to? Mary experienced great joy and even greater sorrow throughout her life as the mother of "God made Flesh". While presenting the new born Jesus at the temple, Mary is pleased to encounter the very devout Simeon who acknowledges the baby as the long awaited Messiah. He says "He is the light to reveal God to the nations and He is the Glory of your people Israel. He will cause many to fall but will be a joy to many others. Although sent by God, many will oppose Him and a sword will pierce your very soul". JOY & SORROW, this became the constant theme of Mary's life. Escaping to Egypt to save her baby from death and finding refuge there; the families reunion after Herod died; loosing Jesus and then finding Him in the Temple; witnessing his miracles and the adoring crowds as He preached as well as His arrest, torture, conviction, crucifixion and death. To bury ones own Son is the greatest sorrow yet Mary also got to know the Joy of His resurrection. Upon her own death, Mary was taken, body and soul to be with her Son again in Heaven. We all love a happy ending but that is not the end of Mary's story. Since then, Mary has seen so much turmoil in our nations that she came back to appear to many people including children throughout the world with a message Peace. She wants us all to Pray the Rosary, a prayer devoted to Her as a means to bring us back to Jesus. Mary will carry all our prayers directly to Our Heavenly Father. Mary wants more than anything to reunite the Holy Family of which we are all part. In the weeks to come, the students will pray for peace through the rosary and we encourage you to do the same. Our united voices have tremendous power.

As we welcomed the youth back to Sunday School Class for the new year, we wanted to explore what is important to all of us as Christians. The exercise was to come up with a short list of 3-5 key concepts that our faith is built on and it proved to be harder than it sounds. The youth came up with so many ideas that it was difficult to narrow them down and agree on a short list. The list was long and included: Love, The Word, Charity, Sacraments, Prayer, Love for God, Holy Trinity, Jesus, Service, Celebration of High Holidays, Love & Believe in God, Compassion, Trust in God, Honesty, Faith, Respect, Thankfulness, Eucharist, Forgiveness, Church Attendance, Miracles, Mary and a Call to Help the World. That was the short list.
Through some very lively conversation, they concluded that it was impossible to sum it up in just a few words. When we look at the humble beginning of Jesus’ life and the building of His ministry, we are able to at least see the origins of the principles of our Faith. Our Bible starts with
" In the beginning, GOD created..." and after He created everything including people, He spoke to us and we responded. It also tells us "God gave us His only Son and whoever believes in Him will have everlasting life." Therefore, we can conclude that Loving and Believing in God, Prayer, The Word and following Jesus must come first and that all the other building blocks stem from those. As we continue to explore what it is to be "People of God"
we will learn to appreciate the rich tapestry that is our Christian Faith and come to embrace all that entails.

Thanks to the generosity of so many parishioners, the St. Vincent de Paul Society was able to provide Christmas Dinner to about 70 families. As the food arrived, our youth were there to receive it, carry it to the other side of the church, sort it and pack the boxes along with hand made cards. 9:00 am Monday morning, Dec 21 several of the youth were paired up with SVDP members to make the deliveries and this was when the real magic of giving happened. As they returned, there were many comments such as "I really appreciate what I have", "I had no idea there was such need right here in our neighborhood"," I am so glad I was able to help" , "We need to do more the rest of the year" and "I'm going home right now to tell my mom thanks for everything and I love her". Perhaps the most profound was one teen's reaction to a family with 4 children and a mom who was quite ill. She told me she had just cleaned her room and had 2 bags with things she was purging and how she wanted to go home right then, get them and take it back to the family. Although we could not do so right then, I assured her we could deliver anything she wanted. Christmas Eve she asked me to meet her in the parking lot after mass and to my great surprise, she handed me 2 large gift bags filled with new toys that she and her family went shopping for. The compassion she felt toward this family compelled her to act in a generous and powerful way. Christmas morning, as I rang the bell, I felt so blessed to be the messenger. I handed the gifts to the Dad with a brief explanation of where they came from and turned to leave. I was not quite to my car when I heard the squeals of delight from the children inside as Dad re-entered the living room with the treasures in hand. Jesus taught us that "Whatever you do for the least of mine you do for me." This gesture of love in Jesus' name has certainly had an impact on that family as well as the teen. I pray we can keep the spirit of giving alive throughout the year!

The National Evangelical Team also known as NET conducted a retreat for our youth this past Wednesday. We also welcomed a group of youth from St Clements to experience this wonderful event. The Team of 10 young adults engaged our teens through skits, music, prayer, personal witness and reflection. After presenting to the whole group, they broke into small groups to delve deeper into what it means to truly know and love Jesus. The experience of prayer was peaceful and personal with a real connection. We are blessed to have shared in this remarkable gift of spirit, faith, youth and sincerity. This team dedicates a year to travel coast to coast conducting retreats in the effort to bring teens closer to God. Please keep them in your prayers as they continue this important work.

The lesson focused on the different parts of the Mass, in particular the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We explained to our youth that the most solemn moment of the Holy Mass is the Consecration where the bread and wine is changed miraculously into precious Body and Blood of Christ; God become Man even though the appearance remains the same. Jesus Christ gave himself up for our redemption and His Body and Blood nourishes us. Our Lord is really present with his humanity and his divinity, offering Himself for us on the altar just as He offered Himself for us on the cross. So we must attend Mass frequently and receive the Body and Blood in a state of Grace.

To continue our exploration into "What are Angels?", Rosanne Campbell did a great deal of research to lead our lesson. Angels are defined as "Very powerful spiritual beings created by GOD to serve Him as messengers and protectors for us. Many accounts in the Bible have them appearing to people with a message from the Lord. They are " spirits in the divine service to those who will inherit salvation" ( Hebrews1:14). Jesus tells us in scripture (Matthew 18:10) that each child has a personal guardian angel who continually sees the face of God in Heaven. The bible refers to Angels well over 200 times and indicates there are many. Luke2:13 speaks of the Multitude of heavenly host praising God. Seraphim Angels which means "burning ones", are lit from within. Their job is to guard God's Throne in Heaven by surrounding it and constantly praising God.
The most powerful Angels include Michael (Fire, Revelation12:7), Gabriel (Water, Daniel 9:22), Raphael (Air, Book of Tobin) and Uriel (Earth, Enoch10) Another very powerful Angel is Lucifer, known as the Fallen Angel or Satan. According to Jesus ( Luke 10:18), his fall from heaven looked like lightening. The Cherubim Angels protect God's Glory and are known for their wisdom. Although they are usually portrayed as cute babies with tiny wings and big smiles, they are so much more. They are first referenced in the bible in Genesis 3:24 as the Guardians of the Tree of Life. In summery, Angels are agents for God's justice working to right the wrongs in our fallen world, channels of Mercy for God's love to flow to us, they work to encourage and strengthen our faith in God and help us to inspire others to do the same. Angels are credited with performing miracles and engaging in spiritual warfare against demons as well as helping humans overcome temptations. Angels are GOD'S ARMY and I would not want to be without them.

This week's lesson was on Prayer lead by Danny. We gathered in the church at dusk and drank in the peace and quiet of a candle lit nave. The youth prayed in many different ways including conversational prayer, memorized, meditation, scripture, psalms and music. Olivia helped them as well through her singing of " Carry on my Wayward Son, There'll be peace when you are done".
We concluded with a candle procession up to the sanctuary where they placed the candles at the base of the Altar along with their personal intentions while Danny and Olivia played some live praise and worship music in the background. It was good to see the youth unplugged from their devices and plugged into God. Hopefully this exercise will help them to find that quiet, peaceful place on their own at home or wherever life takes them.
